New Testament Commandments

New Testament Commandments

New Testament Commandments is a sermon about the new commandments that Jesus gave instructing us to love one another; as he loved us. Explore the commandments of the New Testament.

Old Testament Commandments

God gave the ten commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai and they form the basis of the Old Testament law. The first set is about loving God. The rest are about loving your neighbor. Most people believe that if you keep the ten commandments, you’ll be okay at the end of your life. There is a problem with that. Generally, people are unable to keep all ten commandments. The Bible says if you offend one point of the law, you offend the whole thing. You need to keep it all or you don’t. In all, the Old Testament has 613 commandments. Who can keep all of those? No one but the Lord himself.

New Testament Commandments

Some believe New Testament commandments don’t need to be followed since they are saved by grace. Thank God we are saved by grace. When we are saved, we need to keep the commandments of God because Jesus told us to. Keeping the commandments of God is evidence that we love Him. And therefore, keeping the commandments of God is evidence we have been saved. So, the New Testament believers are not to keep the commandment to get saved, but because they are saved.

New Testament Commandments sermon starts with verses from John 14:15:

14 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

I John 2:3:

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

I John 5:1-3:

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Jesus gave us a new commandment in the New Testament, revealed during the last supper, that we are to love one another as He loved us:

John 13:15:

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 13:21-35:

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Jesus also told husbands to love their wives to the point that you give your life for them as He did:

Ephesians 5:25:

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Jesus also told us to love one another to the point that you give your life for each other as He did:

John 15:12-13:

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
