The Bible is the world’s best-selling book, with an estimated 5 billion copies sold, and it continues to achieve record-breaking annual sales. While exact global figures are difficult to track, reports indicate that more than 35 million Bibles are distributed annually by major societies, with U.S. sales alone exceeding 13.7 million in 2024, reflecting a 22% increase.
The word “bible” derives from the Greek ta biblia, meaning “the scrolls” or “the books.” The word is derived from the ancient city of Byblos, which was the official supplier of paper products to the ancient world
The oldest known Biblical text dates to approximately 2700 years ago. However, Biblical stories were passed down orally and only written down later.
The oldest surviving full-text manuscript of the New Testament is Codex Sinaiticus. It was discovered at the St. Catherine monastery at the base of Mt. Sinai in Egypt in the 1840s. It dates from about 325 CE.
